3rd Grade

Happy New Year!

Posted by Ashley Smith at 1/6/2012

Happy 2012! I hope everyone enjoyed their winter break and the holiday season.

Social Studies: We began our unit on Ancient Civilizations this week. Students searched for artifacts in their homes and participated in a Third Grade Museum. We labeled and described our artifacts and set up our classroom like a museum. Then we traveled to the other classes to explore their artifacts. There were many interesting pieces including an old recipe book, a Egyptian Chess Manual, a cinnamon necklace, our parents' stuffed animals, baby shoes, war veteran ID tags, and even an old lead pencil. The students enjoyed learning about how some objects have changed throughout the years. We also created a time line to show students how far back we are really studying. In the next few weeks we will study Ancient Mali, Greece, and Rome.

Math: We are busy learning our multiplication facts through pictures and array models. Each evening we must study the assigned facts at home. In class students have study partners that are testing them on their facts. Our ultimate goal is to know all of our facts to 12 and get our name on the multiplication wall of fame!

Reading: We are learning about how authors use the characters' actions, feelings, voices, and descriptions to help us understand the story. This will help us when we develop characters in our own stories in writing. We are seeing how an author lets us learn about their characters.

Writing: We are completing our personal narratives for our Treasure Books. We are discussing the writing process and how we need to revise and edit our work before our final draft. Many of us are in the revising and editing stages and moving quickly to the final draft! We are very excited for these pieces to be published.
