Spring News from Mrs. Nagle’s Class

Math- we began our fraction unit and have been learning about numerators, denominators, equivalent and mixed fractions, and fractions of a set. After we finish this unit we will be learning about decimals and comparing them to fractions. Remember to continue to practice the multiplication facts with your child.

Reading- We are continuing our study of traditional literature and have been learning about fairy tales and myths. The children are also reading informational narratives and expository nonfiction stories. They are using inferencing, and rereading strategies to aid in their comprehension of these materials. Children took a reading practice SOL test this week to practice their test taking strategies. We will continue to review and practice in the coming weeks.

Science- Mrs. Greene has been working with us on our energy unit and the children received “magic beads” as part of our lesson last week. If they have not shared this experience with you, please ask them about it. We will be exploring renewable and nonrenewable forms of energy for the next several sessions in Discovery Lab.

Social Studies- We are finishing up our study of Greece and beginning our study of Rome this week. Students are learning about location, climate, occupations, sports, entertainment, architecture, and the government of Rome and Greece. Most importantly we are learning about how ancient cultures have influenced the present in terms of architecture, government, and sports.

Reminders: Please remember to send back the form for the treasure books that you received at parent/teacher conferences. You need to check off the box at the bottom if you do not wish to purchase any other books and sign the form. The children will not receive their free book unless this form is returned. If you have misplaced your form, just let me know and I will send you another one.
