Ashlawn Earth Day Celebration: April 22, 2010
1000 Acts of Green
<!--[endif]-->
2010 presents a unique opportunity for Ashlawn’s Global Citizenship Project: the 40th anniversary of Earth Day and its theme of a billion acts of green. The goal is to get one billion people across the globe to take action to better the Earth. As part of this worldwide effort, Ashlawn students, staff and their families will engage in environmental service projects and household greening activities. Our goal is to have the Ashlawn community complete 1,000 green acts by April 22, 2010. We will tally all the actions and submit the result to the Earth Day Network.

Acts of Green Ideas
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->All School Projects:
<!--[if !supportLists]-->o <!--[endif]-->Walk and Roll to School Rally: The Environment Committee and CHAWK (Championing Health And Wellness in Kids) will organize neighborhood meeting places and a before-school rally at Ashlawn on April 22 to promote walking and “rolling” to school.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->o <!--[endif]-->Trash-Free Lunch Day: The Environment Committee will work with the Ashlawn community to organize a trash-free lunch day on April 22 to minimize waste produced at lunch. Students will calculate a baseline prior to April 22 to determine how much waste is typically generated, identify ways to reduce waste as much as possible, and then measure the waste produced on April 22 to determine the reduction. (See http://www.epa.gov/osw/education/pdfs/lunch.pdf for details.)
<!--[if !supportLists]-->o <!--[endif]-->Musical performance by Magpie: This renowned group will perform at Ashlawn on Earth Day.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Grade Level Projects: The Environment Committee will support staff in engaging students in completing acts of green during Earth Week. The service projects would be undertaken by grade level, where possible, and will be coordinated where appropriate with the new APS “Creating a Culture of Conservation” program, which will focus on energy conservation. Projects will be posted here as they are finalized.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Family Acts of Green: We will inspire Ashlawn families to complete new acts of green and report them collectively. (Staff and their families are welcome to participate too.) Each family will receive a checklist of simple green actions. Sample actions include changing to energy-efficient light bulbs, using alternative transportation instead of driving, and planting trees. We’d ask families to return their forms in time to compile and tally them by Earth Day.

Complementary Activities
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Erosion prevention project: Extended day students in the Environment Club are discussing ways to reduce erosion on the site of the old slide. Students’ ideas will be presented/displayed on Earth Day.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Poetry and Art: To provide a visual, creative arts component, teachers are requested to use the environment as the theme for their students’ submissions to the 2010 edition of Ashtales. The Environment Committee will arrange for a select number of submissions to be displayed during Earth Week, along with additional works (including poems, photos, videos, and original art) that students wish to submit directly to the Environment Committee.
