| The Culture component of the GCP focuses on developing and fostering respect and care for cultures around the world and within our school community. Activities that support this component include: 1) Integration of the component into the regular curriculum. Each grade level studies a different continent: Kindergarten: survey of all continents 1st Grade: South America 2nd Grade: Asia 3rd Grade: Africa 4th Grade: North America (Native Americans) 5th Grade: Europe 2) Spanish Language: Ashlawn began the FLES program in 2008 so that every student now participates in Spanish language classes. 3) Partnership with Lincoln School in Costa Rica: A group of Ashlawn 5th graders spend one week in April in Costa Rica learning about the rich biodiversity of the country and interacting with students at the Lincoln School. 4) Geography Club: Geography Club provides an opportunity for 4th and 5th graders to have an increased opportunity to learn the basics (continents, countries, capitals) as well as hear first-hand experiences about specific countries and geography-related careers. The Club meets twice a month after school for one hour to learn about the physical, historical, and cultural aspects of different countries. A snack of food from the country is always a highlight of the day! |
