Program Description

Mathematics
The fourth grade standards place emphasis on multiplication and division with whole numbers and solving problems involving addition and subtraction involving fractions and decimals.  Students will continue to learn and use basic multiplication facts as they become proficient in multiplying larger numbers.  They will investigate relationships among three dimensional and three dimensional figures.  Students will be helped to develop a wide range of skills and strategies for solving a variety of problem types.

Language Arts
In fourth grade, reading and writing skills support an increased emphasis on content-area learning and utilization of the resources of the media center.  Students will use text organizers, summarize information, formulate questions, and draw conclusions to demonstrate reading comprehension.  The core writing program that is used is called Being a WriterWords Their Way is the developmental word study and spelling program that the fourth graders take part in.

Science
Science in fourth grade will stress the use of using information, analyzing data, and validating experimental results.  Defining the variable in an experiment are emphasized and making simple predictions is underscored.  Questioning and hypothesizing become more detailed at this level.  Students learn about electricity, motion, interactions among Earth, moon, the sun, environments, and weather.  The importance of natural resources in Virginia is emphasized.

Social Studies: Virginia History
Students develop a greater understanding of Virginia's rich history, from, the early settlements of American Indian language groups and the founding of Jamestown to the present.  Geographic, economic, and civic concepts are presented within the historic context.
