I am overjoyed to be on the fifth grade team!! This is my 25th year as a teacher, and second as a fifth grade teacher; I've covered every other grade in the elementary spectrum previously. [This is my 18th year at Barrett as well.] I am originally from New York City, but have lived in Virginia since 1989. I have a BA in History, Political Science and English Literature from Emory University in Atlanta [and Lancaster University in England]. I have a MA in Secondary Education from the University of Michigan and another MA in International Ed. from American University. My wife is also a teacher in Arlington, 1st grade at Tuckahoe. Both my sons are in college, Aidan is a junior at George Mason and Asher is a first year at Sarah Lawrence - I'm not sure what to do with the emptiness at home. When not engaged in elementary pursuits I read, go to the movies, ride my bicycle and root for New York sports teams [Not the Yankees though, it's a long story...]

Greetings! As a new member of the fifth grade team, I am thrilled to be a part of this dynamic group of teachers. This past summer I got married so students are getting used to calling me by my new name! For the past four years I taught fourth grade here at Barrett and before that I taught third grade at the American Community School in Amman, Jordan. Prior to living in the Middle East, I earned my Master's degree in Elementary Education from Boston College and taught second grade French Immersion outside of Boston. After graduating from college (Denison University), my first teaching experience was as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Cameroon, West Africa where I worked as a middle school English teacher and developed my love of teaching, languages and travel. As a DC native I am happy to be back around family and friends and to reap the benefits of living near our nation's wonderful and diverse capital city. On weekends I enjoy cycling, running and spending time outside. I'm truly looking forward to this school year and working with students and families to make it a rewarding year for each child in the room!

I am so excited to have the opportunity to teach here at Barrett. I began teaching in 1994 and I have had the privilege to teach kindergarten in Portsmouth, VA and eighth grade in my home state of New Jersey. I received my bachelor’s degree in Education from Old Dominion University. But after working with middle school children and watching them created and learn through technology, I knew that I wanted to learn more. So I completed my masters in technology integration from NOVA Southeastern. Although moving away from my family in New Jersey was difficult, I love living and teaching in Virginia. I love spending time with my husband, my family in NJ and running with my very fuzzy Goldendoodle “Gordy”. This past summer I had the incredible opportunity to attend my first National Endowment for the Humanities workshop in Chicago. I studied with some of the best teachers from 30 different states. I am looking forward to sharing what I learned this summer with my students. My favorite time of the year is football time because I love the JETS! I am looking forward to a wonderful and exciting school year!
Kathleen Duggan
Hi, my name is Kathleen Duggan. I have been teaching 5th grade at Barrett Elementary since 2004.
I am originally from Boston, Massachusetts. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from The University of Massachusetts, Amherst. I worked as an intern probation officer in the Hampshire County Superior Court and then I became a licensed social worker in Massachusetts, back at the dawn of disco. I am married for 28+ years now, and have four children. My husband's job has taken us to Pennsylvania, Maryland and we eventually moved to Austin, Texas, where I received my teaching certification in General Education, and Special Education. I recently received my Masters of Science in Education, with a concentration in Literacy K-12, from The University of New England. I am going through empty-nesting with my children all out of the house. My daughter Emily is an officer in the Navy stationed in Japan, and she just got engaged. My son Matthew is a Master at Arms [Navy police officer] stationed in Colt's Neck New Jersey. My son Patrick is a recent graduate from Boston University and is also a Navy officer and is now attending his second year at Tulane Medical School. My youngest son Tommy is in his fourth year at Fisher College in Boston. Needless to say, I am a very proud mom!
I adore working with children, and I feel that I have found my true calling in teaching! I am really looking forward to working with the Barrett 5th graders this year!
Carrie Lombardi
Hi, my name is Carrie Lombardi. I love teaching fifth grade and have been teaching it since 2002. I grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts- the birthplace of basketball and Dr. Seuss. I have my bachelor's degree from Syracuse University and am a HUGE Orange fan during the NCAA basketball season. I have my Master's in Education from the University of Virginia. Both college colors are orange and blue, my classroom reflects that these are my favorite colors! I am married and have two dogs, a rescued mutt and a retired greyhound and a cat, who owns the house. I love to run and am Barrett's coach for the running club. I also enjoy spending my time outdoors, and am co-chair of Barrett's Outdoor Classroom Committee. Teaching is my passion! I even teach yoga and weight-lifting classes after school at the local gym.
