We believe that all children can learn and be successful. Each child is an individual and should be provided the opportunity to an environment to learn at his or her own pace. We believe that each child should be given the opportunity to develop his or her best potential mentally, physically, and socially so he or she can become a productive, creative, and responsible member of society. In 3rd grade, we encourage the development of responsibility, independence, and autonomy.
Students will be occupied in a variety of individual and collaborative work designed to accommodate their diverse and individual learning styles. The third grade curriculum will combine basic skills, authentic learning, and critical thinking.

Guided reading groups will give students the opportunity to develop as individual readers while participating in socially supportive activities in class. The newly adopted Harcourt, Reading series will also be used to enhance reading fluency. As part of our balanced literacy program, students will also be participating in Word Study, where students will be sorting and working with word patterns that focus on the etymology of words.
As part of the writing program, students will be focusing on the writing process of prewriting and organizing ideas, drafting, revising, and peer editing before creating a final document. A variety of writing styles and genres will be covered. Daily grammar lessons will also be incorporated.
Students are expected to read at least 20 minutes each night at home to improve reading fluency.
