Technology Planning Committee

The Technology Planning Committee is currently looking at changes happening to the network in APS over the summer and how these changes will affect H-B. We are also looking at which technologies we want to start using at H-B next year.

All minutes of meetings, and information about topics and projects currently being discussed are posted on the website. Check out our current projects and give us your opinions!

Technology Planning Meetings are open to all members of the H-B community. Please attend if you can, and leave your comments on the blogs for consideration.

Instructional staff can access their old apsmail at https://apsmail.apsva.us/gw/webacc. Do not send email using the old email system.

How should student laptops be allocated?

We have a student:computer ratio of approximately 2.5. With room, curriculum and staff changes, how can we allocate computers to provide access to the most students while providing for curriculum and special needs? Please leave your comments on this blog and come to the Technology Planning meeting Thursday, June 23.

During the 2010-11 School Year student computers were distributed as follows:

General circulation: 52 desktops, 38 laptops, 4 iMacs
Sky High Lab - 26 desktops, 1 laptop

Middle Earth Lab - 26 desktops, 1 laptop, 4 iMacs

Cart One - 12 (This was usually in Trailer 2 and first floor)

Cart Two - 12 (This was usually in the library)

Library laptop check-out - 12
Classroom labs: 30 desktops, 20 laptops, 29 iMacs
Library classroom - 23 total - 3 desktops + 20 laptops (one used by Carol, frequently supplemented with cart two)

Business lab - 27 desktops

Photo Lab - 21 iMacs

Music lab - 8 iMacs (used by music and film students)

206 - HILT lab - 10 desktops
Special Ed classrooms - 3 desktops, 14 laptops
104 - Leigh - 3 laptops

203 - Julie - 2 laptops, 1 desktop

316 - Francisca - 2 laptops, 1 desktop

317 - Thomas - 3 laptops

324 - Betsy/Patti - 4 laptops, 1 desktop

APS is installing a more robust wireless infrastruction in order to allow both APS-owned and personal devices to connect wirelessly and receive services. This means students and staff will be able to bring their personal laptops, iPads, phones and other devices that connect to the internet using wifi.

What will open wireless look like at H-B? How will this change things in your classroom? What are the good and bad implications of students using personal devices at school?
