 Congrats to Wakefield's Laurell Wiersma - APS Teacher of the Year!

Students from across Northern Virginia were awarded plaques and scholarships recently in recognition of their academic achievements at the 23rd Annual Black Scholars Awards Ceremony sponsored by the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. of Northern VirginiaThe following Wakefield students were recognized: Yasmin Ibrahim, Welela Tarekegne, Walid Omer, Quashay Benton, Sloane Mebane, Keirra Duckett, Marcus Tucker, Meheret Endale, Melay Gebregziabher, Morgan Phelps, Muktaru Jalloh, Ibtsam Abdoush, Isryel Cruz, Javay Engelking-Scott, Jonathan Coons, Khadidjath Diawara, Dawite Ewnetu, David Bass, and Dagmawi Fasil.

Congratulations to Marianna Lagenbeck for making it to the DC Region Entrepreneurship Challenge.  She is one of the top five young entrepreneurs in the DC area.  Finals are Tuesday where she will find out if she is going to the NFTE National Competition.  Congratulations Marianna!  We are so proud of you! 
 
To Shaivy Mukherji’s Teachers for Tomorrow students who took the Para Pro test. William Arevalo, Jasmine Kroyer, Lilian Portillo, and Charles Williams passed the exam. Three of them are certified to work as an instructional assistant in Virginia and Jasmine is certified to work in Arlington. 
 
2012 National Spanish Examinations. This means that they scored between 60% and 74% higher than all other participants nationwide.  The following students earned honorable mentions: Carlos Estrada, Eve Giordano, Maddie Krause, Maddie Magargee, Samuel Newby, Jasmine Pauldurai, Khaela Sanchez, and Williams Cubias.  “Attaining an honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious,” said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams, “because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with 143,641 students participating in 2012!”

  • Diego Torrico who was selected to attend the Military Order of the World War (MOWW) Valley Forge Leadership SummitThe Leadership Summit "celebrates the United States Declaration of Independence, US Constitution, Bill of Rights and their relevance to our daily lives."  Six APS cadets were selected based on their academic achievements, demonstrated leadership, and support to the mission of AFJROTC "developing citizens of character, dedicated to serving their nation and community
  • Maureen Naughton who appeared in a Fox 5 segment about her Entrepreneurship class.
  • Marwa Awad Bahr (House 2, Jay Calfee),  Julia Simon (House 1, Jess Baker) and Rachel Hagy (senior, Kim Warshaw) were accepted for VA Junior Academy of Sciences presentations this year!  All three students will have the opportunity to present at the VJAS conference at Norfolk State University.
  • Joe Rubinstein’s Personal Finance students Kenis Zelaya, Andrew Figueroa, and Fransisco Iglesias finished 1st place in the GMU region and 3rd place in the state in a Stock Market Competition put on by the VA Council on Economic Education
  • Katie Wheelock’s French IV students, Samantha Chavez and Lena Mobin, won first place in a contest sponsored by the French Embassy in Washington D.C.  The contest, Dis-moi dix mots qui te racontent, (Tell me ten words that tell you a story), asked for students from around the world to illustrate one of ten French words on a 3x5 postcard.  Their winning cards, illustrating the words SONGE (dream) and HISTOIRE (history/story), were on display at the French Embassy for the international celebration of the Francophonie.  Each student received a letter of congratulations from the Educational Affairs Program Officer as well as a beautiful French poster featuring the word each chose
  • Daniel Brown and Jhonny Maldonado were accepted into the Summer Residential Governor’s Schools for Academics.  Daniel was accepted for Humanities and Jhonny for Arts.
 
Congratulations to Sloane Mebane for being selected as the winner of a National Achievement $2,500 Scholarship. The National Achievement Scholarship Program, which exists specifically to honor academically talented Black Americans, is conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).  
 
Congrats Music Department!
 
This spring our Music Department competed against bands, choirs and orchestras from all over the country at the Festival Disney music competition. Congratulations to all students and teachers!
  • The Choir received a Superior rating and won Best in Class
  • The Orchestra received an Excellent rating and won Best in Class
  • The Symphonic Band and Indoor Guard received ratings of Excellent and the Jazz Band received a rating of Good.
 
Congrats Entrepreneurship Students - Congratulations to the following students who won the Wakefield Business Plan Competition in Entrepreneurship: 1st Place:  CJ Hernandez; 2nd Place:  Marianna Lagenbeck; 3rd Place tie between:  Daniel Hill and Jimmy Adams; Honorable MentionZoe Hemenway. First and second place winners, CJ and Marianna, go on to NFTE Regional Competition.  If they earn first place, they have the chance to win $10,000!   Congratulations to all students who competed. 
 
Congrats AP Economics Students - Congratulations to AP Economics students Julian Douglass, Mia Mladenovic, and Richard Tan who have qualified to participate in the Virginia Council of Economics Education (VCEE) Statewide Economics Championship Challenge on Friday, April 20th at Virginia Commonwealth University. They qualified as a team based on their combined scores from an online challenge they recently completed. Their team, appropriately named "The Sophomores," was one of only 12 teams statewide to qualify for the finals.  Congratulations also belong to their teacher, Mr. Pat Kelly.  The team will be recognized by the School Board at the April 12, 2012 School Board meeting.
 

CONGRATULATIONS to the Wakefield Madrigal Singers who earned an overall rating of “Superior” in both performance and sight-reading.   Congratulations are also due to the Wakefield High School Singers for achieving an overall rating of “Good” in performance and an “Excellent” in sight-reading.   This is an amazing accomplishment for a combined group of beginning and intermediate singers.

The academic team didn't disappoint this weekend. It finished fourth in the state behind only Thomas Jefferson, Maggie Walker (Richmond) and Western Branch from Chesapeake.Wakefield lost its opening game to Western Branch, but then defeated Osbourn (Manassas) and Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach) to advance to the quarterfinals. There, the Warriors were eliminated by last year's champion, Maggie Walker.
 
Congratulations to the team: seniors Rasheeq Ahmed and Dawite Ewnetu, and juniors Alec Jackson, Julie Ryland, Sam Matzner, Brandon Corts, Amine Amarir, and Sib Quayum, all of whom played and contributed. Special thanks to team adviser Bob O'Donnell!
 

CONGRATULATIONS to Josselin Contreras who was the top Reflections Contest entry at Wakefield and the county and placed third with an award of merit at the District level. Che Sheehan was the top literature entry at Wakefield and the county.

Congratulations to Maureen Naughton who has been selected by the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) to represent NFTE DC as a 2012 Global Enterprising Educator of the Year Winner, presented by MasterCard Worldwide.

Maureen and former Wakefield student Khalid Khalifa (2012 Global Young Entrepreneurs Winner, sponsored by Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses!) will be honored at NFTE’s annual celebration, the Dare to Dream Awards Dinner, on Wednesday, April 18th, 2012 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City.  At the dinner we will also be recognizing the 2012 Global Young Entrepreneurs along with special honorees Ernst & Young, LLC, Wes Moore and Joy Thomas Moore.

Congratulations to Henry Majano who is a 2x Regional Champion at 132 lbs! Henry will advance to the VHSL State Wrestling Tournament at Robinson High School beginning Friday, February 17! Henry now has under his belt again this season the following: National District Champ, NOVA Classic Champ, & Regional Champ! He begins his quest for the State title.

CONGRATS! To the Wakefield Scholastic Bowl Team - the WARRIORS are the 2012 National District Champions & they are also the Northern Regional Runner-up! This is quite an accomplishment for the Warriors and Coach Bob O'Donnell!
 A big congratulations goes out to Wakefield’s Its Academic team and Mr. O’Donnell for their big win over South County on Saturday to finish as the Northern Regional Runner-up.  Varsity team members Rasheeq Ahmed, Julie Ryland, Brandon Corts, Sam Matzner, and Alec Jackson won the National District championship, sweeping all 7 of its games, including victories over Washington-Lee and Yorktown.  They finished second in the Northern Region behind only Thomas Jefferson.  In the regional tournament, its victories included decisive wins over Fairfax County powers Woodson and Langley.  The Junior Varsity team members Amine Amarir, Samantha Spytek, Abdi Jima, Nazmul Hossain, and Dawite Ewnetu not only went undefeated, but never trailed in a game.  The Warriors have qualified for the VHSL State Competition on February 25th at the College of William & Mary!  What an AWESOME Accomplishment!
WRESTLING RESULTS - District Champ in 132 lb. weight class - Henry Majano! Henry Vasquez takes 3rd in 106 lb. weight class! Both qualify for the regional tournament!
 
GYMNASTICS - Congratulations Leah Corts - Leah will be competing int he regional gymnastics meet on February 9 on the beam and bars!

Two Wakefield students won second and third place in the NFTE (Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship) Regional  Competition Alex Gilmore won third place and $500, while Layla Amarir took second place and won $750.  Alex and Layla were the only students from Northern Virginia to advance to finals!  Congratulations!

Two Wakefield students won the NFTE (Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship) region semi-final competition and will be advancing to finals next Thursday (Feb 2).  Alex Gilmore and Layla Amarir will be competing against three other students from the DC area for their chance to compete in the National competition and win $10,000.  Alex and Layla were the only students from Northern Virginia to advance to finals!  Good luck to both students.   
 
Congratulations to Mathew Chen on his selection to the District 12 All-District Band.Mathew placed 22nd out of 112  clarinetists from Arlington and Fairfax.   
 
CONGRATULATIONS to Chris Gillespie who received the Wolf Trap Foundation’s 2011-12 Grant for Performing Arts Teachers.  Chris will be able to use the funds and support of the Wolf Trap Foundation for the spring production of Beauty and the Beast!

Wakefield Sweeps Arlington Decal Contest

The 4 finalists for the Arlington County Vehicle Decal competition are all Wakefield Photo students!  That means for a 3rd year in a row, a Wakefield student will win the contest.  The Arlington County decal contest is open to all Arlington County students and the winner of the contest will have their artwork displayed on over 155,000 vehicles registered in Arlington County. Congratulations Wakefield German Teachers - APS German teachers  Ms. Trimble and Ms. O’Grady were recently awarded the Center of Excellence Award by the American Association of Teachers of German.  The APS German program will serve as a model for schools around the country.  Congratulations to the teachers and students for this well-deserved recognition.

Congratulations to Avion Mills for being awarded the All Star Cast Award for her performance in Wiley and the Hairy Man at the Virginia Theatre Association this weekend. The cast received excellent and superior scores.

Congratulations to Sloane A Mebane for being named a National Achievement Scholarship Semifinalist. Sloane joins more than 1,600 Black American school seniors who have been designated semifinalists in the 48th annual Achievement Scholarship.

Congratulations to the following students who won Wakefield High School's Business Pitch Competition in Entrepreneurship class: 3rd Place, winning $15 – Demond Johnson; 2nd Place, winning $25 – Jimmy Adams; 1st Place, winning $50 – Alexia Worthey. Alexia will go on to compete in the DC region pitch competition at Capital One in McLean VA.  Congratulations to all students who competed.   

Congratulations to our Entrepreneur, Khaled Khalifa.  He went to the national competition in New York City and made it to semi-finals.  He did not win finals.   However, thanks to you and your votes, he was a runner up in the online pitch competition and won $500.  Thank you so much for your votes and support. 

Congratulations again goes out to photography students Madeline Brophy and Celena Madlansacay.  Not only have their photographs earned National Medals in the 2011 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, but now both of their works have been selected by the staff of The President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities to be included in a small and prestigious exhibition of national award recipient work from The Scholastic Awards!

Only 44 works of art, from the nearly 500 that received National Awards, will be on exhibit for an entire year in Washington, DC.

On WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14th, the Department of Education is hosting a celebratory ribbon-cutting ceremony at The Lyndon Baines Johnson Department of Education Building for the grand opening of this prestigious year long exhibition.

 
Congratulations goes out to junior, Samantha Spytek, who won a Grand Champion award for her photo-illustrated, poetry book in the competitive exhibits at the Arlington County Fair this summer.  The judges were all professionals and included photojournalists, teachers, local artists, and representatives of the Corcoran Gallery of Art.  She also received five other awards for her black & white and color photography:
-Champion in black & white photography (for the entire section):scratched photo portrait of dog
-1st Place in color photography (flora class): Costa Rican flower
-2nd Place in color photography (fun class): Costa Rican frog
-3rd Place in black & white photography (collage class): rock montage
