| The SOLAR (SOL Academic Remediation) program will begin its fifth year serving 8th graders who are in danger of failing, and/or who have underperformed based on grades, and/or who have earned low pass/high failing scores on SOL tests. The program runs after school on Tuesdays (8th period) and Thursdays (8th and 9th periods). Snacks are provided to students on Thursdays. Selected students participate for about 20 weeks. Students who have demonstrated deficiencies in reading and math based on last year’s SOL tests and current year quarterly math assessments are invited to join SOLAR. There is a Homework Club during 8th periods and teachers use many resources for specific SOL preparation during 9th period, including released items from past SOL tests, Apangea, www.glencoe.com, and www.classzone.com. There will be five teacher-mentors this year, each mentoring up to 12 students per session. We will serve 60 8th graders over the course of the year. The program has been funded by Arlington Public Schools SOL Grant Program for the past four years. This year, Gunston requested $10,495 to fund the program. | |
