Shooting Star

Gunston All Stars

Gunston ALL STARS is the umbrella of services Gunston Middle School provides to all students to meet their academic and developmental potential.

We believe all students can achieve, and that all students deserve educational opportunities to make them successful. Gunston strives to create a school environment that fosters positive relationships, engagement in meaningful school citizenship, and academic excellence.

Goals

  • To reduce the achievement gap between African-American, Hispanic, and white students.
  • To improve SOL (Standards of Learning) test scores
  • To improve DRP (Degrees of Reading Power) test scores
  • To increase the number of students on the Honor Roll
  • To increase membership in homework clubs
  • To increase participation in service projects
  • To reduce absenteeism and tardiness
  • To reduce the number of disciplinary referrals

Targeted Programs

Gunston Cohort Program
StarThe GUNSTON COHORT PROGRAM strives to increase the number of African-American and Hispanic students who pass SOL tests, make the honor roll, and read at or above grade-level. Six 10-member groups led by trained GMS staff members will meet weekly to support and encourage each other to maximize their academic potential.

Gunston Mentor Program
StarThe GUNSTON MENTOR PROGRAM aims to foster the development of a caring relationship between a responsible, committed adult and a Gunston Middle School student. Each student will be paired with one staff member and will meet one-on-one every week.

Gunston Eldermentor Program
StarThe GUNSTON ELDERMENTOR PROGRAM is a multi-age group of Arlington community volunteers who meet every Wednesday with advanced students of English as a Second Language. Paramount to the mentor program is each group coalescing and bonding over the course of the year. Through the relationships built, student mentees are more motivated to solidify their academic attainment.

Strategic After School Programing

Our STRATEGIC AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMMING provides an opportunity for students to participate in a variety of activities that provide academic support and promote leadership skills. Examples include:
