 | 2012-2013 Awards & Honors Academics | | | National French Contest Exam | | investWrite Sixth Grader Jacqueline L. has won 1st place in the state in the investWrite Virginia State Essay Contest. This is an annual economics challenge as part of the Stock Market Game provided to advanced math students. You can read Jackie's essay here. Jackie has been invited by the Board of Directors of the Virginia Council on Economic Education and the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond to a luncheon and awards presentation on May 23, 2013. Mr. Julia Iudicello, Gunston math teacher, and Ms. Elizabeth Fucella Burgos, resource teacher for the gifted, collaborated on instructing this unit of study. Gunston Latin scholars recently took the National Latin Exam for 2013. Congratulations to our Gunston Scholars!

NATIONAL HISTORY DAY Congratulations to Carmen S. who won 2nd place in the local District 5 National History Day Contest held on March 2 at Mt. Vernon High School. She will advance to the state competition to be held in Williamsburg, Virginia on April 20 with her paper about Ghandi, his life and work in civil disobedience and non-violence and his impact on history. Carmen did extensive research for her paper and interviewed three professors at local universities working in the field of conflict resolution. On Feb. 2, 2013, four Gunston students participated in the Northern Virginia Regional MATHCOUNTS Competition: Hawase J., Miles T., Alistair W.,and Pablo W. (Top Gunston Scorer). They worked throughout the morning on the Sprint Round, Target Round and Team Round and demonstrated incredible perseverance. Special thanks to their dedicated coaches, Gunston math teachers Mr. Bennett and Mr. Mencarini, who prepared them for this rigorous math competition. Fastt Math Four Gunston students finished their Fastt Math Facts (Multiplication 0-12) and have moved on to division facts. Congratulations to Joanna M., Cindy R., Najma O., and Rydell R. Knowledge Masters team placed 10th in the state of Virginia answering 180 questions correctly and earning 1300+ points. Awesome work by our hard working team!! Thanks to Ms. Burgos for coaching the Knowledge Masters team! Intermediate Math Open The following seven Gunston students spent from 8-4 at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology at the Intermediate Math Open on Saturday, November 2, 2012. They were accompanied by Gunston math teachers Ms. Allen and Ms. Grosz. Katariina A. - 8th Grade Thalia A. - 8th Grade Lydia D. - 8th Grade Isabella G. - 8th Grade Alex L. - 7th Grade Clayton R. - 7th Grade Pablo W. - 8th Grade This is a team competition run by TJHSST's Varsity Math Team. Students were grouped into mixed level teams with no one from their home school. There were close to 30 teams, and of these, Gunston had two students on the top 3 teams.
