WMCK TV

WMCK TV
McKinley's Morning News Program

What is WMCK TV?

McKinley Elementary School presents the WMCK TV News program each morning to every classroom in the building. Students learn to use sophisticated , high-tech broadcasting equipment.  The first goal of each broadcast is to deliver daily announcements clearly and professionally.  The second goal of WMCK TV News is to spotlight all the great things happening in our school and community. Visitors and parents can watch the broadcast every morning on channel 46 at 9am in the front lobby of our school. Come take a look sometime.

What specific jobs do students do on a WMCK crew?

We have three WMCK News Teams: Red, Green, and Blue, who rotate on a monthly basis so that each team will serve 3 times during the school year.  This year each team consists of 11 students – 3 anchors, 5 techs, and 3  fourth grade apprentices. Anchors are responsible for reading the text each morning from the teleprompter. Anchors must deliver the information on camera clearly and in a professional manner.  Techs rotate to a different job each wee.  By the end of the second rotation they will have done all five jobs at least once. The five jobs are director, sound tech, camera, teleprompter, and head end monitor/gopher. 4th grade apprentices stand by to assist or fill in when needed. They ”train” as they go . Next year they will have priority status to be on a team.

How do students become a part of WMCK?

Only 4th and 5th grade students are eligible for WMCK TV. During September, applications are made available. Due to the limited number of spots available not every student is guaranteed a position on the team. The sooner an application is returned the better. Applications returned past the deadline cannot be considered.. Those who apply to be anchors must audition. A panel of three teachers  select the anchors.  Teams are usually announced the last week of September with the first rotation beginning the first week of October. If you have questions regarding the process, please contact Mrs. Putnam in the library.

What is the typical content of each broadcast?

Each broadcast consists of morning announcements, special video segments, the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence,  and a thought for the day.

How can you view a broadcast?
Parents or visitors can watch it in the school’s lobby. If you want a behind the scenes glimpse of the show, please give Mrs. Putnam prior notice and arrive in the library  by 8:50 am the morning of the broadcast.
