December 3rd - Parent Lounge

The Family Engagement Committee of the PTSA is hosting a Parent Lounge from 8 am - 3 pm on Thursday, December 3rd to coincide with 9th Grade conferences. Please stop by room A-134 if you would like to speak with other Wakefield parents, learn how to use APS tools for parents and guardians like Naviance or ParentVue, or just want a quick cup of coffee. We hope to see you there!

Teacher Grants Awarded

The PTSA has awarded $4997.00 in teacher grants for the 2015/16 School Year. Each year, teachers apply for grants to fund student classroom or after school activities for students, and each year the PTSA and Boosters fund them. For the first time, we received more requests from teachers than we were able to fund. The Boosters, who also raise money for student clubs and activities, received some of the requests the PTSA was unable to fund and will be considering those soon. This is one way that your support of both the PTSA and Boosters has a direct impact on both teacher support and the well-being of Wakefield students.

Did you know....?

We are are not just a regular Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) at Wakefield but a PTSA - the "S" stands for students. At every PTSA meeting this year, we are inviting students to speak with us about their activities, initiatives and concerns; in September we heard from the Student Government officers about their initiatives and some sophomores who have joined with their W-L counterparts and started a non-profit to feed Arlington families (DimesforDining.org). In October we heard from students who have participated in the Sister City experience with Coyoacan, Mexico. It is a great way for us all to connect with our high school students, hear what is important to them and be sure we are meeting their needs. Come join us!

Wakefield also has representatives on the South Arlington Working Group (SAWG). The SAWG was considering the practice field at Wakefield for the new elementary school, but this option is now not in the top three based on our most recent conversations. The top three APS sites being considered are Jefferson Middle School, Drew Elementary and Gunston Middle School. For additional information on the sample site studies, meeting minutes and other documents, visit the APS South Arlington Working Group page.
Wakefield is represented by: Alicia Cackley (voting member); Kathleen McSweeney, (alternate member), and Henok Waltengus, Wakefield Alum Class of 2014 was also appointed as an alumni rep. Our PTA President, Kate Van Slyck, also attends the meetings and is closely following the conversation.
