• Late August: All 4^th and 5^th grade students gather for an information session about signing up for instrumental lessons and choosing an instrument. In recent years, Barcroft alumni have assisted Mr. Johnson in demonstrating the band and orchestra instruments.  In September, Arlington will host an Instrumental Back-to-School Night at Jefferson Middle School.
  
• November: Students have the opportunity to audition for the Arlington County Junior Honors Band and Orchestra. Students who successfully audition work with other gifted music students and present a concert in March. In 2011, the band will be directed by Mr. Johnson, and the orchestra will be directed by Ms. Estelle Roth of Long Branch and Patrick Henry Elementary Schools.
• December: The Winter Concert features the debut of our beginning instrumental students as well as performances by all students of “classic” and holiday songs.
• February: In 2011, Wakefield High School's Band and Orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Denny d'Alelio and Mrs. Gene Pohl, will host the Wakefield Pyramid Concert. Students who are in 5^th grade and have played for 2 years learn three selections and perform with 150 other elementary school students. The bands and orchestras from local middle schools and Wakefield High School also perform.
• May or June: The Spring Concert features the culmination of our work in music lessons during the year. In past years, the orchestra has presented selections from “Fiddlers’ Philharmonic”, as well as “New World Symphony” (arr. Michael Allen) and Variations on “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”. The band has presented “Centurion” by Mark Williams, “Bugler’s Dream” (arr. Paul Lavender), and “Resolution” (Sean O’Loughlin). These substantial works help prepare students as they move on to play in performing groups in middle school.
